Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of the Total Physical Response (TPR) Strategy in improving the verb proficiency of Grade 7 students. The study employed a quasi-experimental research method using a pretest-posttest design. The participants consisted of 60 Grade 7 students who were divided into two groups: 30 students in the control group and 30 students in the experimental group. The independent variable of the study was the instructional approach, specifically the use of the Total Physical Response Strategy in the experimental group and the traditional teaching method in the control group. The dependent variable was the verb proficiency of the Grade 7 students. A researcher-developed questionnaire on the verb proficiency of Grade 7 students served as the research instrument. Pilot testing was conducted at Carvasana National High School using a 60-item test. Following reliability analysis, 30 items were retained and used in the actual study. Prior to the intervention, the control group obtained a mean score of 15.70, while the experimental group obtained a mean score of 13.93, both indicating a moderate level of verb proficiency. These findings suggest that the two groups had comparable levels of proficiency before the intervention. After the intervention, the mean score of the control group increased from 15.70 to 20.00, whereas the experimental group demonstrated a greater improvement, with its mean score increasing from 13.93 to 21.93. These results indicate an improvement from a moderate to a high level of verb proficiency, particularly among the students who were taught using the Total Physical Response Strategy. Overall, the findings of the study demonstrate that instruction using the Total Physical Response Strategy is more effective than the traditional teaching method in enhancing the verb proficiency of Grade 7 students.
