Abstract

This study investigated the influence of digital technology engagement on the self-help skills of kindergarten learners. The research aimed to profile the learners, determine their level of smart technology usage and self-help skills, and test the relationship between these two variables. Employing a quantitative descriptive-correlational design, the study was conducted at Taloot Integrated School in Cebu Province, Philippines. Using total enumeration, seventy-five (75) parents of kindergarten learners served as respondents. Data were collected through an adopted survey questionnaire and analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, weighted means, standard deviations, and Pearson’s r correlation. Results showed that learners had access to various smart devices, primarily smartphones, and their usage was moderate (“sometimes”) and often supervised. The learners’ self-help skills were generally at a “proficient” level. Statistical analysis revealed a negligible positive correlation between technology usage and self-help skills, which was not significant leading to the acceptance of the null hypothesis. The study concludes that digital technology engagement, as reported, does not significantly influence the development of self-help skills in kindergarten learners. Instead, these competencies are more likely shaped by direct practice, parental modeling, and structured daily routines. It is recommended that schools implement a collaborative Home–School Reinforcement Strategy Plan to systematically foster self-help skills through consistent guidance and practical experiences, rather than relying on technology exposure alone.
