Abstract

The purpose of this study was to assess the level of effectiveness of social media use in learning, reading comprehension proficiency, and communicative competence among Panay Bukidnon students in the Province of Capiz during the Academic Year 2025–2026. It also sought to determine whether there were significant differences and relationships among these variables. The researcher employed a questionnaire to measure the effectiveness of social media use in learning, a reading comprehension test to assess reading proficiency, and a rubric to evaluate communicative competence. A mixed methods research design was utilized, together with appropriate statistical analyses. A total of two hundred thirty-six (236) students participated in the survey and were selected through stratified random sampling. Meanwhile, seven (7) students participated in the Focus Group Discussion (FGD). Data were analyzed using frequency count, mean, percentage, standard deviation, Pearson’s r, and One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) at the 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that the level of effectiveness of social media use in learning among the students was high, with an overall mean of 3.61. Overall, the students’ level of reading comprehension proficiency was good, with an overall mean of 19.22. Their level of communicative competence was moderate, with an overall mean of 10.95. The results further showed that there was no significant difference in communicative competence across the different levels of effectiveness of social media use in learning. However, a significant difference was found in communicative competence across the different levels of students’ reading comprehension proficiency. The study also revealed a significant relationship between the effectiveness of social media use in learning and reading comprehension proficiency. Conversely, no significant relationship was found between the effectiveness of social media use in learning and students’ communicative competence. Finally, the findings indicated a significant relationship between students’ communicative competence and their reading comprehension proficiency.
