Abstract
This study determined the contribution of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP) activities to the development of discipline and responsibility among learners in the Schools Division Office of Ilagan City. Specifically, it assessed the extent of BSP activities in terms of regularity of meetings and participation, types of activities, and learner engagement; determined the levels of discipline and responsibility among learners; examined the overall contribution of BSP; and tested the significant relationship between the extent of BSP activities and discipline development. The study employed a descriptive-correlational research design. The respondents consisted of 35 BSP learners, comprising 19 females and 16 males, who were selected through purposive sampling from selected public schools in the Schools Division Office of Ilagan. Data were collected using a researcher-made questionnaire validated by experts and analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, weighted mean, ranking, grand weighted mean, and the Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient (Pearson r) at the 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that the implementation of BSP activities was very extensive, with female and male respondents obtaining grand average weighted means of 4.74 and 4.73, respectively, both verbally interpreted as Strongly Agree. Discipline development was likewise rated Strongly Agree, with grand average weighted means of 4.92 for female respondents and 4.96 for male respondents. Responsibility development also received high ratings, with grand average weighted means of 4.76 among females and 4.86 among males. The respondents further recognized the overall contribution of BSP to their character formation, discipline, responsibility, application of scouting values, and citizenship, obtaining average weighted means of 4.91 for females and 4.69 for males, both interpreted as Strongly Agree. Correlation analysis yielded a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.534 and a Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.811, resulting in the acceptance of the null hypothesis. Hence, no significant relationship was found between the extent of BSP activities and discipline development among the respondents. The study concludes that the BSP program plays a significant role in promoting discipline, responsibility, leadership, and positive character formation among learners through meaningful scouting experiences. Although learners highly perceived the benefits of BSP activities, the statistical findings indicate that participation in BSP alone does not significantly influence discipline development, suggesting that other factors also contribute to shaping learners’ disciplinary behavior. It is recommended that schools continue strengthening BSP implementation while integrating complementary values formation programs and collaborative efforts involving parents, teachers, and the community to further enhance learners’ holistic development.
