Abstract

The study determined the impact of game-based learning strategies on the motor skill development of Grade 9 learners at Bulacao National High School, Cebu City, during the School Year 2025–2026. Specifically, it sought to present the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of age, sex, Body Mass Index (BMI), and level of physical activity prior to the intervention; assess their motor skill performance before and after the implementation of game-based strategies; identify the games used during the intervention; determine learners’ perceptions of the approach; and analyze challenges encountered. A pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design was utilized with forty (40) Grade 9 students as respondents, selected purposively. Data were gathered through pre- and post-intervention motor skill assessments, survey questionnaires, and thematic analysis of learner feedback. Descriptive statistics, including frequency, percentage, and mean, were used to summarize profiles and perceptions, while a paired-samples t-test determined whether motor skill performance differed before and after the intervention. Findings revealed that learners’ motor skills were generally poor prior to the intervention but improved to satisfactory levels afterward, with a statistically significant difference between pre- and post-test results. Learners expressed positive perceptions, highlighting enjoyment, motivation, confidence, teamwork, and stress reduction. Challenges were minimal and mostly related to environmental conditions and preparation. The study concludes that game-based learning is an effective and engaging strategy for improving motor skills and recommends its integration into Physical Education instruction for sustainable learner development.
