Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the level of understanding of poetry and appreciation of literature among Grade 7 students. It also aimed to identify whether there is a significant relationship between students’ understanding of poetry and their appreciation of literature. The respondents of the study were Grade 7 students from President Manuel Roxas Memorial Integrated School South, Hughes Street, Tanque, Roxas City, Capiz, during the School Year 2024–2025. The study employed a survey-correlational research design. The necessary data were gathered through the administration of a questionnaire and a test. Out of the two hundred thirty-eight (238) Grade 7 students, one hundred fifty (150) participants were selected using stratified random sampling and the lottery method. A test consisting of twenty-five (25) items was used to measure the students’ understanding of poetry, while a researcher-made questionnaire was used to assess their appreciation of literature. Understanding of poetry served as the independent variable, while appreciation of literature was the dependent variable. All collected data were treated with confidentiality and were used solely for the purposes of this study. The data were analyzed using computer-processed statistics such as percentage, mean, frequency count, standard deviation, and Pearson r. The alpha level was set at 0.05 for all inferential tests. The findings revealed that Grade 7 students demonstrated a moderate level of understanding of poetry and a very high level of appreciation of literature. Furthermore, the study found no significant relationship between students’ understanding of poetry and their appreciation of literature.
