Abstract

This study aimed to determine the relationship between cognitive load, metacognition, and language learning of Grade 7 students in Filipino. The researcher selected a total of three hundred eighty-nine (389) participants from the Province of Capiz, including Roxas City and the Capiz Division. They were chosen through stratified random sampling using the lottery technique from their respective groups. A pilot test was conducted with thirty (30) students who were not included in the main study to measure the reliability and validity of the instrument. A mixed-method approach was employed, combining quantitative and qualitative procedures to thoroughly examine the relationship among cognitive load, metacognition, and language learning in Filipino. For the quantitative phase, a descriptive-correlational design was utilized to measure the levels of cognitive load, metacognition, and language learning, and to determine whether there was a significant relationship among them. Meanwhile, in the qualitative phase, a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) was conducted to gather deeper insights and experiences from selected students. The data were analyzed using computer-processed statistics, including frequency count, percentage mean, standard deviation, Pearson r, with an alpha level set at 0.05 for all inferential tests. Findings revealed that overall, the level of cognitive load was rated as “high,” metacognition was rated as “very high,” while language learning was rated as “moderate” among Grade 7 students. Moreover, the study found that there was “no significant relationship” between cognitive load and metacognition, cognitive load and language learning, as well as between metacognition and language learning among Grade 7 students in the Province of Capiz.
