Abstract

This qualitative study explored the lived experiences of first-time registered Filipino nurses working in Germany, focusing on their adaptation, challenges, and coping strategies in a new healthcare environment. Using a phenomenological design, ten Filipino nurses were purposively selected as participants, enabling an in-depth understanding of their personal and professional journeys. Data were gathered through one-on-one interviews and analyzed thematically, guided by Meleis’ Transition Theory and Benner’s Novice to Expert framework. Findings revealed that the nurses’ experiences could be described as a series of “peaks” and “valleys.” Valleys included difficulties in language proficiency, credential recognition delays, cultural adjustment, workplace discrimination, homesickness, and physical strain in patient care. Conversely, peaks were characterized by professional growth, skill enhancement, financial stability, social support systems, and the eventual recognition of their competence in the German healthcare system. Coping mechanisms such as peer networks, resilience, mentoring, and continuous language and skills improvement played crucial roles in their adjustment. The study concludes that while migration to Germany offers Filipino nurses’ significant opportunities for career advancement and improved quality of life, it also presents challenges that require strong institutional support, effective orientation programs, and policy-level interventions. These findings may inform recruitment agencies, healthcare institutions, and policymakers in both the Philippines and Germany to create supportive structures that ease transition and maximize the potential of migrant nurses.
