Abstract

This study employed a mixed-method sequential explanatory design, integrating quantitative and qualitative approaches to provide a comprehensive understanding of the knowledge, foundational skills, and performance in street dance among college students from higher education institutions in Iloilo during the academic year 2025–2026. The quantitative phase utilized a descriptive-correlational survey design, while the qualitative phase employed Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) to explain and enrich the quantitative findings. The participants consisted of 263 first-year college students, randomly selected from a population of 828 students enrolled in Physical Education courses across selected public and private higher education institutions in Iloilo. The study utilized researcher-developed instruments, including a Multiple-Choice Knowledge Test and Foundational Skills and Performance Rubrics. These instruments underwent expert validation and pilot testing to establish content validity and reliability prior to administration. The independent variables were knowledge and foundational skills in street dance, while performance served as the dependent variable. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, and inferential statistics through One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Pearson’s product-moment correlation coefficient (Pearson’s r) at a 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that college students demonstrated a low level of knowledge and moderate levels of foundational skills and performance in street dance. No significant difference in performance was found across levels of knowledge, whereas a significant difference was observed across levels of foundational skills. Knowledge was not significantly related to either foundational skills or performance, while foundational skills showed a strong positive and significant relationship with performance. Based on these findings, the I SWAG (Improving Knowledge, Foundational Skills, and Performance) Street Dance Learning Module was developed to strengthen students’ knowledge, foundational skills, and overall performance.
