Abstract

This study examined the relationship between school support systems and the sustainability of the Special Program in Journalism (SPJ) in public secondary schools in Mountain Province. Specifically, it described the respondents’ profile, assessed the extent of school support systems, determined the level of sustainability of the SPJ, and tested the significant relationship between the two variables. The study employed a descriptive-correlational research design involving 34 respondents composed of school administrators and SPJ teachers. A researcher-developed questionnaire validated by experts served as the primary data-gathering instrument. Descriptive statistics, including frequency, percentage, and weighted mean, were used to summarize the data, while Pearson product-moment correlation was used to determine the relationship between variables. Results revealed that school support systems were generally rated as moderately evident, with administrative and leadership support and community and stakeholder involvement receiving the highest ratings. Financial and budgetary support received the lowest rating. The sustainability of the SPJ was likewise rated as moderately evident, with quality of instructional delivery obtaining the highest rating and student enrollment and retention receiving the lowest. Statistical analysis showed no significant relationship between school support systems and the sustainability of the Special Program in Journalism (r = 0.062, p = 0.549). The findings suggest that although school support systems contribute to the effective implementation of the program, other factors may influence its long-term sustainability. Strengthening financial support, expanding professional development opportunities, and improving student retention strategies are recommended.
