Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the level of understanding of novels and appreciation of one’s own culture among Grade 9 students. It also aimed to determine whether there is a significant relationship between the understanding of novels and the appreciation of one’s own culture among Grade 9 students. The participants of the study were Grade 9 students from Ivisan National High School, Poblacion Norte, Ivisan, Capiz, during the School Year 2025–2026. Out of three hundred eighty-six (386) enrolled Grade 9 students, the researcher selected only one hundred ninety-six (196) participants. They were chosen through stratified random sampling, and the sample size was determined using Taro Yamane’s Formula. This study used a survey-correlational research design. The necessary data were gathered through a test on novel comprehension and a questionnaire on appreciation of one’s own culture. The independent variable in this study was the understanding of novels, while the dependent variable was the appreciation of one’s own culture. The collected data were analyzed using computer-processed statistics, percentage mean, frequency count, standard deviation, and Pearson r. The alpha level was set at 0.05 for all inferential tests. The findings of the study revealed that the level of understanding of novels among Grade 9 students was “Good.” The level of appreciation of one’s own culture among Grade 9 students was “Very High.” It was also found that there was “No Significant Relationship” between the level of understanding of novels and the appreciation of one’s own culture among Grade 9 students.

Keywords: Understanding of novels, appreciation of one’s own culture, Grade 9 students.
