Abstract

Arnis, recognized as the national martial art and sport of the Philippines, holds a vital role in promoting indigenous culture while contributing to school-based sports development. Beyond its cultural significance, it serves as a platform for enhancing students’ physical fitness, discipline, and competitive skills. In this context, the present study sought to examine the physiological attributes of Arnis athletes and analyze how these factors relate to their competitive performance and inform effective coaching strategies in the Division of Capiz. A quantitative descriptive research design was used, and data were gathered from 52 Arnisadors. The physiological aspects were assessed using the Philippine Physical Fitness Test (PPFT), while training strategies were evaluated through a researcher-made questionnaire covering pre-, during-, and post-competition phases. Statistical tools such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation were utilized. Findings revealed that most participants were aged 13–15, predominantly female, and had less than one year of experience. Results showed that cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, balance, agility, speed, power, and reaction time ranged from good to very good, while muscular endurance reached excellent levels. However, muscular strength and coordination remained fair. It was also found out that strength, balance, power, and coordination improved with age, experience, and higher levels of competition. Coaching strategies were rated outstanding across all phases, particularly in conditioning, communication, and performance reflection. However, nutrition planning, anxiety management, tactical adjustments, and video analysis needed improvement. The study concluded that although coaching strategies were effective, a shift toward science-based training programs was needed. A program of activities was proposed to improve muscular strength and coordination and to enhance overall athlete performance.
