Abstract
This study aimed to determine the level of proficiency of Grade 10 students at Limos National High School in translating between the Filipino and English languages, as well as the factors that hinder their translation performance and the proposed interventions to address these challenges. A quantitative descriptive research design was employed, using total enumeration as the sampling technique, with a total of forty-seven (47) respondents. The instruments consisted of a translation test covering Filipino to English, English to Filipino, and the translation of idiomatic and figurative expressions, along with student interviews. Findings revealed that the overall level of student proficiency in translation was moderately low, based on a mean performance score of 19.01. Statistical analysis showed a significant difference in proficiency according to sex and parental occupation, but no significant difference was found based on birth order. Three major factors were identified as hindrances to translation proficiency: personal factors, including lack of interest in the Filipino subject and weakness in both Filipino and English; school-related factors, including insufficient instructional materials, limited time allotted for the topic, and inadequate practice; and family-related factors, including the low educational attainment of parents and limited academic language support at home. In response to these findings, the researcher proposed a comprehensive intervention plan encompassing seminars, weekly translation exercises, peer review sessions, creative translation activities, and portfolio presentations.
Keywords: Translation proficiency, Filipino language, English language, translation skills, idiomatic expressions, figurative language, secondary students, family support, school-based intervention, language learning.
