Abstract

Jigsaw Method is a cooperative learning method which is applicable in teaching skill-related fitness components where every learner is part of the learning process. This study determined the effectiveness of jigsaw method in teaching skill-related fitness components in Physical Education subject among the Grade 9 students. It involved 60 Grade 9 students at Marigondon National High School in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu, Philippines. This explanatory sequential mixed-methods research design determined the performance of the students in skill-related fitness components before and after engaging in the Jigsaw method. The results revealed that the Jigsaw method was effective in improving the students’ performance in skill-related fitness components tests. There were significant improvements observed in the performance in agility-hexagon agility test, balance-stand test, body coordination-juggling, power-standing long jump, reaction time-stick drop test, and speed-40-meter sprint. However, while development of performances was made after utilizing the method, there were some components such as power- standing long Jump remain its result and speed-40-meter sprint with good level. The findings support that using Jigsaw as a teaching tool demonstrated ability to foster teamwork and improve physical education performance. Teachers are advised to implement lesson guide utilizing the Jigsaw method as its proven effective in promoting social interaction through collaboration and active engagement that helps to deepen understanding and improve learning outcomes. Future research should examine the long-term impacts of cooperative learning techniques on performance and skill retention in Physical education especially teaching skill-related fitness components. This study emphasized Jigsaw’s transformative potential in enhancing technical and social learning outcomes in physical education.
