Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of vocabulary strategies on the reading comprehension of Grade 7 students. Specifically, it examined the level of students’ reading comprehension before and after the implementation of the intervention, whether there was a significant change in their reading ability, and the challenges they experienced in using vocabulary strategies. The study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative methods. In the quantitative component, a pre-test and post-test were administered to measure the students’ level of reading comprehension before and after the implementation of the vocabulary strategies. Meanwhile, in the qualitative component, journal reflections and interviews were utilized to identify the experiences and challenges encountered by the students in the process of using the strategies. The participants of the study consisted of 96 Grade 7 students. Based on the overall results, it was revealed that prior to the implementation of the intervention, the students’ level of reading comprehension varied, with the majority falling within the low to moderate levels. After the implementation of the vocabulary strategies, an improvement in the students’ reading comprehension levels was observed, indicating the positive effect of the intervention. The analysis also showed a significant difference in the level of reading comprehension before and after the intervention. Qualitative data identified several challenges, including difficulty in understanding, limited vocabulary, difficulty in expression, lack of guidance, low confidence, and time constraints. Overall, vocabulary strategies proved to be an effective intervention in improving the reading comprehension of Grade 7 students.
