Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effects of using e-short stories on the Filipino reading skills of Grade 6 students at Bagong Nayon IV Elementary School during the 2024–2025 school year. It addressed the ongoing challenge of low reading comprehension and engagement among students by integrating digital storytelling into instruction. A four-week intervention was conducted using 20 curated e-short stories presented in digital format with interactive vocabulary and comprehension elements. The study employed a mixed-methods design, utilizing both quantitative and qualitative approaches. A purposive sample of 50 students identified as having low reading comprehension through the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Phil-IRI) served as the study participants. Data were gathered using vocabulary and comprehension tests, teacher observations, student surveys, and parent feedback. Descriptive statistics, including mean, percentage, and frequency distribution, were used to analyze quantitative data, while thematic analysis was applied to qualitative responses. Results showed consistent improvement in students’ reading comprehension and vocabulary scores, with weekly vocabulary averages increasing from 80.69% to 89.42% and comprehension scores rising from 3.08 to 4.11. Additionally, students demonstrated higher engagement, with 44 out of 50 expressing strong interest in e-short stories, and teachers observed increased participation and confidence. Despite challenges in access to devices and supervision, feedback from parents, teachers, and students was largely positive. The study recommends continued use of e-short stories in reading instruction and highlights their potential to enhance literacy when supported by guided learning and equitable access to digital tools. Future research is encouraged to explore long-term effects and broader application across grade levels.
