Abstract

The identification of students’ weaknesses in writing composition that still need to be developed, as well as the determination of the factors that affect their writing skills, were the primary objectives of this study. It also aimed to develop a worktext in composition writing that would help improve their skills. The study utilized a descriptive qualitative research design. The participants of the study were Grade 11 students from the HUMSS strand. Based on the analyses conducted, the content analysis of the students’ compositions revealed that they had weaknesses in organization, punctuation, and writing mechanics. These skills still need further development among the students. From their statements, it was also found that the factors that commonly affect their writing are environment, knowledge of the Filipino language, and time. Based on the results of the study, the following conclusions were drawn: students have weaknesses in organizing ideas, punctuation, and writing conventions. Students’ writing is influenced by their environment, their knowledge of the Filipino language, and time. Based on the findings and conclusions, the following recommendations are proposed: the development of composition writing skills should be continuously strengthened. Teachers are encouraged to provide more activities that will further enhance students’ skills in organizing ideas, using punctuation, and following writing mechanics. The developed worktext in composition writing may also be used to help improve students’ writing skills in composing such texts.
