Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of Labirinto Filipino, a board and dice game designed to enhance Filipino language skills through a more dynamic, collaborative, and interactive learning approach. Specifically, the study seeks to describe the learners’ experiences, perceptions, and levels of engagement in using the game as a supplementary instructional material in the Filipino subject. The research was conducted in Carmen, Cebu, and involved one hundred (100) students enrolled in the Bachelor of Elementary Education program, representing varying levels of proficiency in the Filipino language. The study employed a qualitative research design, utilizing focus group discussions, structured interviews, systematic observations, and open-ended surveys to gather in-depth data on the participants’ learning experiences. Gameplay sessions were conducted over a four-week period, two to three times per week, as part of regular classroom learning activities. The collected data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify emerging themes related to learner motivation, collaboration, learning strategies, and emotional responses toward the use of the game. The findings revealed that Labirinto Filipino was effective in increasing students’ interest and motivation in learning the Filipino language. The game also contributed to the development of interaction, cooperation, and a deeper understanding of Filipino language concepts, including vocabulary, grammar, and contextual language use. The study recommends the continuous enhancement of the game’s design and content to further improve the learning experience and promote the integration of game-based learning in Filipino language instruction.
