Abstract

This study, entitled “Factors Affecting the Course Selection of First-Year Students in BSED–Filipino,” employed a qualitative research design to gain an in-depth understanding of the reasons behind students’ choice of course at Cebu Technological University–Consolacion Campus. The study was conducted through thematic analysis of responses from eighty-three (83) respondents. Findings revealed that personal factors—such as interest, vocation, and love for the Filipino language—were the primary reasons for course selection. Social factors, including the influence of family members and teachers, also played a significant role in students’ decision-making. Economic factors, such as free tuition, financial capability, and the location of the university, were likewise considered. The respondents’ statements further indicated that the desire to pursue a profession with a clear career path and employment opportunities was another motivating factor in choosing the course. Some responses showed that their experiences in Filipino as a subject during secondary education strengthened their interest in pursuing the program. Overall, the data demonstrate that course selection is shaped by the combined influence of personal, social, and economic factors that directly affect students’ decisions.
