Abstract
This study examined the effectiveness of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in enhancing the critical thinking skills and competencies of fourth-year Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEED) students who were enrolled in The Contemporary World at Palompon Institute of Technology – Tabango Campus during the second semester of A.Y. 2024–2025. The research employed a mixed-method design, combining quantitative and qualitative approaches to provide a comprehensive understanding of the intervention’s impact. Twenty-seven purposively selected students participated in the study. Quantitative data were gathered through a one-group pre-test and post-test design, focusing on three key competencies: identifying the attributes of global corporations, explaining the role of international financial institutions in the global economy, and narrating the history of global market integration in the twentieth century. Qualitative data were obtained through a learning experience survey that captured students’ reflections on their engagement with PBL. Findings revealed that prior to the intervention, students demonstrated limited baseline knowledge and critical thinking abilities, performing below expectations across all competencies. After the implementation of PBL, their performance improved substantially, with many students attaining higher levels of comprehension and demonstrating the ability to apply higher-order thinking skills. Statistical analysis confirmed a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test results, affirmed the effectiveness of PBL as an instructional strategy. Qualitative analysis of students’ reflections further revealed meaningful learning experiences, including the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills, improved collaboration and communication, the application of knowledge to real-world issues, personal growth and confidence-building, and perseverance in overcoming challenges. Overall, the study concluded that PBL was highly effective in improving academic performance while also fostering holistic student development, equipping learners with essential life skills necessary to thrive in an increasingly complex and interconnected world.
