Abstract

This study aimed to develop and evaluate exfoliating scrub formulations using coconut sapal and coffee waste. It also sought to assess the sensory attributes of each formulation in terms of color, aroma, texture and exfoliating property and the respondents’ acceptability level. An experimental method of research was employed. Descriptive test analysis utilized statistical treatments such as the mode, frequency, percentage, weighted mean, and Shapiro-Wilk Test and Kruskal-Wallis Test for the significant difference. A set of questionnaires were provided to 50 respondents for sensory characteristics of coconut sapal and coffee waste exfoliating scrub. The data revealed that Formulation 2 with 50 grams of coconut sapal, 6 grams of coffee waste and 70 ml of coconut oil was the most acceptable formulation based on the respondents’ acceptability level. Statistical analyses also indicated a significant difference in the acceptability level among the three formulations but no significant difference in the respondents’ overall acceptability. The results suggest that coconut sapal and coffee waste are effective natural exfoliants, with Formulation 2 being the most acceptable. It further denotes that the exfoliating scrub promotes an innovative and safer sustainable cosmetic product that align with Schumpeter’s Theory of Innovation and Palmer’s Zero Theory. It is recommended that the techno-guide for exfoliating scrub using coconut sapal and coffee waste would be adopted and demonstrated as part of community extension, promoting organic cosmetic products and sustainable management of resources.
