Abstract

This study examines gender representation and feminist perspectives in two high-grossing films: The Devil Wears Prada (American) and Thy Womb (Filipino). The research aims to analyze how these films portray women’s roles and experiences within their respective cultural contexts, and how these portrayals reflect different feminist ideologies. The study employed qualitative content analysis to analyze the films, identifying eight gender representations and five feminist perspectives. The analysis revealed that The Devil Wears Prada reflects post-colonial feminist ideals, portraying empowered women in a competitive environment, while Thy Womb embodies pre-colonial feminism, showcasing a woman’s subordination to her husband’s desires within a traditional culture. Both films also highlight materialist feminism, with The Devil Wears Prada emphasizing women’s empowerment through material success and Thy Womb depicting the socioeconomic challenges faced by women in marginalized communities. The study concludes that these films offer contrasting perspectives on gender and feminism, highlighting the complexities and diverse challenges faced by women in different societal contexts.
