Abstract
This research aims to analyze the use of language in selected short stories written by well-known Filipino writers through the lens of pragmatics. The Eight (8) short stories by Genoveva Edroza-Matute, Liwayway A. Arceo, Nick Joaquin, Deogracias A. Rosario, Ramon F. Valmonte, Edgardo M. Reyes, and Severino Reyes were examined by the researcher to identify the pragmatic statements and sentences used in each literary work, determine the types of pragmatics employed in every statement and sentence, and reveal the hidden pragmatic meanings or implicature reflected in the characters utterances in the selected stories. The analysis was conducted based on relevant pragmatic theories, particularly the concepts of speech acts, implicature, context, and presupposition. The findings revealed that these short stories do not merely convey literal meanings but are also rich in implied statements, intentions, and contextual meanings that greatly influence the readers understanding and interpretation. The writers frequently used implicature and indirect expressions to discuss and highlight various social issues such as poverty, injustice, and societal conditions experienced by the characters in the stories.
Keywords: Pragmatics, Short Story, Implicature, Context, Theory.
