Abstract

The study focused on the Assessment of the Impact of Land Use/Land Cover Change in Kalinga. It assessed the extent and impacts of land use/land cover (LULC) change in Kalinga and determine its environmental, social, and economic implications, over a defined period, are the key drivers (e.g., agricultural expansion, urbanization, logging, infrastructure development) contributing to LULC changes in the province. The study utilized the mixed method of quantitative and qualitative designs. The study revealed that Kalinga is undergoing significant land use and land cover (LULC) changes driven by population growth, agricultural expansion, urbanization, infrastructure development, and logging. These changes have major environmental, social, and economic impacts, including soil erosion, increased flood risks, biodiversity loss, and reduced ecosystem services. Socially, communities face greater vulnerability to hazards, while economic challenges arise from declining agricultural lands, despite some opportunities from urban development. Governance and management efforts, exist but are limited by gaps in capacity, participation, and enforcement. Sustainable strategies such as integrated land-use planning, climate-smart agriculture, reforestation, mangrove protection, secure land tenure, and inclusive governance are essential to balance development with environmental protection. Overall, while Kalinga is progressing developmentally, these LULC changes pose significant risks to ecosystems, livelihoods, and community resilience without coordinated management.

Keywords: Impact, land use, land cover, changes, hazards.
