Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Mind Mapping Technique in improving the essay writing skills of Grade 9 students at Abellana National School during the school year 2025–2026. The research employed a one-group pretest–posttest design to determine the difference in students’ skill levels before and after the implementation of the said strategy. Thirty-six (36) students participated as respondents in the study. The instruments used included a pretest, posttest, and a questionnaire to measure students’ attitudes toward the use of the Mind Mapping Technique. Based on the results of the pretest using conventional teaching methods, students achieved a moderate level of performance in content (M=2.47, SD=0.61), coherence of ideas (M=2.53, SD=0.56), and writing mechanics (M=2.28, SD=0.62). After the application of the Mind Mapping Technique in teaching essay writing, the posttest results showed a very high level of performance in content (M=4.11, SD=0.58), coherence of ideas (M=4.03, SD=0.77), and writing mechanics (M=4.08, SD=0.84). The results of the paired samples t-test revealed a statistically significant difference between the pretest and posttest scores across all writing criteria (p < 0.001), confirming the effectiveness of the Mind Mapping Technique as an instructional intervention. Furthermore, students demonstrated positive attitudes toward the use of the Mind Mapping Technique in essay writing, with an overall mean of 3.99 (SD=0.67) for writing skills and 4.09 (SD=0.75) for interest and motivation. Overall, the Mind Mapping Technique was proven to be an effective strategy in enhancing idea organization, clarity of expression, and students’ confidence in essay writing.
