Abstract
This study examines the challenges faced by students in developing adequate skills in correctly spelling words in the Filipino language. Its primary objective is to determine the effectiveness of the Morphemic Approach as a teaching strategy to enhance students’ spelling proficiency and understanding of word structure. The research is significant as it provides evidence of the importance of developing morphological awareness in the advancement of linguistic literacy. A quantitative research design was employed, specifically a Quasi-Experimental Design consisting of a pretest and posttest to measure students’ skill levels before and after the implementation of the Morphemic Approach. The participants were forty-one (41) students from Bachelor of Elementary Education 1A of Cebu Technological University – Consolacion Campus. The data were analyzed using a Paired Sample t-test to determine the significant difference in test results. Findings revealed a significant increase in students’ scores after the application of the Morphemic Approach, confirming that this strategy is effective in improving correct spelling and understanding of word structure. Overall, the study establishes that the Morphemic Approach is an effective instructional strategy in teaching Filipino, as it expands learners’ knowledge of word parts and strengthens their linguistic competence. It is recommended that this approach be integrated into the curriculum and utilized as part of modern language teaching methodologies to further enhance students’ spelling skills.
