Abstract

This basic research was conducted to assess the level of students’ reading skills. The study determined the reading profile of respondents from eight grade in the school year 2022-2023 in Talisayan district. The word recognition level and reading comprehension level of the students were evaluated. The Phil-IRI or the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory was conducted to all the students. The researcher conducted the reading tests. These assessment tools measured and describe the student’s reading performance. The data that was ascertained on word recognition was observed through pronunciation of the words and identifying the miscues incurred in the passage while the reading comprehension was through answering questions given right after their oral reading. Based on the standard set by the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (PHIL-IRI), the respondents were within the frustration and instructional level in reading. In terms of reading comprehension, majority of the respondents were considered under the frustration level which means that they need to put more effort to be able to understand the text and comprehend it. Also, there is no significant relationship between students’ errors and proficiency level. Thus, these findings suggest that for further research to come up with solutions it could be better if the next researchers add more respondents since the study only have 21 participants which may be a factor why there is no significant relationship found between reading errors and proficiency level.
