Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of the first batch of BSEd–Filipino students at Davao del Sur State College. It aimed to identify the challenges they encountered in their academic journey, determine the factors that affected their education, and understand the strategies they employed to cope with and overcome these challenges. The study involved thirteen (13) pioneering students of the BSEd–Filipino program at Davao del Sur State College. A qualitative–phenomenological research design was utilized to gain an in-depth understanding of the participants’ lived experiences. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews guided by research questions. Findings revealed that the first batch of BSEd–Filipino students encountered several challenges, which were categorized into four (4) main themes: academic difficulties, psychological stressors, technical barriers, and financial concerns. Regarding the effects of these challenges on their studies, three (3) major themes emerged from the interviews: academic impact, lack of attendance and participation, and effects on mental health and well-being. On the other hand, the coping mechanisms used by the pioneering students to overcome their difficulties were grouped into three (3) central themes: academic support and guidance, personal growth, and motivation. Overall, the study concludes that the experiences of the first batch of BSEd–Filipino students should be given attention to ensure their continued success in their academic journey.
