Abstract

This survey-correlational research was conducted to determine the grammatical proficiency and writing competence in news headlines and news articles of Grade 6 students of Maayon Elementary School, Maayon, Capiz during the School Year 2024–2025. The participants of this study consisted of one hundred six (106) out of one hundred forty-five (145) Grade 6 students enrolled at Maayon Elementary School. To measure grammatical proficiency, the researcher utilized a researcher-made 19-item questionnaire. Furthermore, to assess writing competence in news headline writing, the researcher required the participants to write five (5) news headlines, each worth twenty (20) points for a total of one hundred (100) points. Similarly, in assessing writing competence in news article writing, the students wrote five (5) news articles, each worth twenty (20) points for a total of one hundred (100) points, scored using a rubric. The instruments underwent content and face validation with the help of three (3) Filipino language teachers. The questionnaire on grammatical proficiency was subjected to reliability and pilot testing. The independent variable of the study was grammatical proficiency, while the dependent variables were the writing competence in news headlines and news articles. The data and relevant information collected were processed using computer-assisted statistical analysis. Descriptive data were analyzed using mean and standard deviation (SD), while inferential data were analyzed using Pearson r, with the level of significance set at .05. The findings revealed that the level of grammatical proficiency of the students was “proficient.” The level of writing competence in news headlines was also “proficient,” and similarly, the level of writing competence in news articles was “proficient.” The study found a “significant difference” in grammatical proficiency based on the students’ level of competence in writing news headlines, and likewise, a “significant difference” in grammatical proficiency based on the students’ level of competence in writing news articles. Furthermore, there was a “significant relationship” between the competence in writing news headlines and the competence in writing news articles.
