Abstract

This study was conducted to thoroughly examine the knowledge in rhetoric and essay-writing skills of Grade 7 students at President Manuel Roxas Memorial Integrated School South, located on Hughes Street, Tanque, Roxas City, Capiz, during the School Year 2024–2025. It employed a survey-correlational research design to determine the relationship between two variables, wherein knowledge in rhetoric served as the independent variable and essay-writing skills as the dependent variable. Out of a total population of 238 students, seventy-five (75) participants were selected through quota sampling and the lottery method. A 25-item test was used to measure the students’ level of knowledge in rhetoric, while a rubric—originally designed by the researcher with guidance from the adviser and validators—was utilized to assess essay-writing skills. The rubric consisted of four criteria: introduction of the topic, organization of ideas, artistic presentation of messages and demonstration of rhetorical knowledge, and concluding insights, with a total of twenty (20) points. The collected data were used exclusively for the purpose of the study and were processed through computer-based statistical tools such as standard deviation, frequency count, percentage mean, and Pearson r, using a .05 alpha level of significance. Findings revealed that the participants’ level of knowledge in rhetoric was rated as “excellent,” while their essay-writing skills were found to be “very high.” Furthermore, a significant relationship was established between the two variables, indicating that a higher level of rhetorical knowledge contributes to the improvement of students’ ability to compose essays effectively.
