Abstract
This study focuses on the level of proficiency of students in proper essay writing. It aims to determine the relationship between their perception and their scores in writing reflective essays. The study was conducted among 41 students enrolled in the BSED FIL-1A Day Class at Cebu Technological University. This research is quantitative as it centers on numerical data to obtain the results from the respondents after the administration of the study. The researchers used a Likert Scale as the primary instrument to assess students’ perceptions regarding the importance, interest, and competence in writing. It contains statements designed to evaluate their skills in writing reflective essays. A rubric was also utilized as an instrument to measure students’ actual writing performance based on the content, organization, grammar, and style of their written outputs. Through this, students’ abilities to organize ideas, think logically, and construct arguments using evidence were assessed. Pearson Correlation was employed to determine the strength and direction of the relationship between the variables, namely “students’ perception” (self-efficacy) and their “actual scores in essay writing.” In addition, a correlational research design—a quantitative approach—was used to examine the relationship between the two variables (perception and scores). Through the results of the study, it is expected to determine how students’ perceptions influence their actual proficiency in essay writing.
