Abstract

This study investigates the stylistic phenomenon of linguistic excess, instances where language surpasses restraint to intensify emotional and sensory impact in five representative poems by William Wordsworth: I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud, Lines Composed a Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey (“Tintern Abbey”), Ode: Intimations of Immortality, The Solitary Reaper, and Desideria. Using systematic close reading and a five-category coding scheme (lexical amplification, syntactic elongation, rhetorical repetition, heightened punctuation/exclamation, extended metaphorical chains), the study identifies the frequency and functional roles of these features. Results show that lexical amplification is concentrated in shorter lyrics (I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud; The Solitary Reaper), while syntactic elongation is more frequent in meditative, long-form lyrics (Tintern Abbey). Repetition contributes strongly to nostalgic and song-like effects in Ode and The Solitary Reaper. The findings support the claim that Wordsworth’s “overflow” is a deliberate stylistic strategy that shapes feeling and meaning rather than unbridled emotion. The paper concludes with methodological recommendations for increasing reliability and scope.
