Abstract
This study employed a survey-correlational research design aimed at determining the extent of the effect of sleep deprivation on the learning and academic performance of Grade 6 pupils of Juan S. Jarencio Elementary School, Ivisan, Capiz. The participants of this study consisted of sixty-four (64) Grade 6 pupils of the said school, selected through complete enumeration, meaning that all pupils were included due to their limited number. The independent variable in the study was the effect of sleep deprivation on learning, while the dependent variable was the academic performance of the pupils. Data for the survey-correlational analysis were gathered through a questionnaire measuring the extent of the effect of sleep deprivation on learning, and the overall grades of the pupils in Filipino from the first to the third grading periods were obtained to determine their level of academic performance. The instrument also included the personal characteristics of the participants. The data were analyzed using computer-processed statistics such as frequency count, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and Pearson r. All inferential tests were set at a .05 alpha level. Findings revealed that, overall, the level of the effect of sleep deprivation on learning was rated as “high,” while the level of academic performance was interpreted as “good.” The study further established that there was “no significant relationship” between the effect of sleep deprivation and the academic performance of the pupils.
